Treatments

The Pulmonary and Sleep Center of the Valley has many treatment options available to help you breathe easier and sleep better. We’ll clearly explain your treatment options so that you can make an informed choice for the treatment(s) that work best for your needs and lifestyle.

Endobronchial Valves (EBV)

For patients who suffer from COPD, emphysema, and other disorders characterized by the trapping of air in certain, overinflated areas of the lungs, endobronchial valves can help. These removable valves are placed in affected areas of the lungs, allowing trapped air to escape and improving overall lung function. The placement procedure is short, and the result is often a reduction in shortness of breath along with more energy as patients begin to breathe better.

Interventional Bronchoscopy

An interventional bronchoscopy is a form of interventional pulmonology that involves inserting a flexible tube, called a bronchoscope, through the mouth or nose and into the airways. When used as a treatment for pulmonary disorders, it is most useful for removing airway obstructions, such as those caused by lung cancer.

Inhalers & Bronchodilators

Inhalers are devices used to deliver bronchodilators – medications that relax the muscles that wrap around your breathing tubes, allowing the tubes to become larger and easier to breathe through. Each bronchodilator is different, based on 1. the chemical makeup, 2. how fast it works and 3. how long it lasts. Your health care provider will work with you to decide which of these medications, or combinations of medications, work best for you.

Lung Volume Reduction Surgery (LVRS)

Lung volume reduction surgery is a procedure often used to remove damaged areas of the lung in order to improve the patient’s overall lung function. This procedure is most often used in patients whose lungs have been damaged by diseases such as COPD. The goal is to help the lungs function more efficiently in order to improve the patient’s ability to breathe and to go about the activities of their daily lives without restrictions caused by breathing difficulties.

Medical and Interventional Pleuroscopy

Medical and interventional pleuroscopy is one of the primary procedures used in interventional pulmonology. This minimally invasive approach is used primarily to treat pleural effusions (The buildup of excessive fluid in the lungs). Not the same as a similarly-named but more invasive procedure, this approach can be used both as a diagnostic tool and as a treatment tool for patients suffering from lung disorders.

Non-Invasive Ventilation

As its name implies, non-invasive ventilation is an approach to respiratory support that does not involve the placement of an invasive endotracheal tube. There are a number of devices that can provide this type of ventilation to patients, including a bilevel positive airway pressure machine, a continuous positive airway pressure machine, and others. Conditions that can benefit from this treatment approach include COPD.

PleurX™ Pleural Catheters

PleurX® pleural catheters help patients manage pleural effusions or malignant ascites outside of the hospital. The PleurX® drainage system lets you take control of uncomfortable and painful symptoms from fluid buildup around the lungs (pleural effusions) or in the abdomen (malignant ascites). A safe, proven option that more than 200,000 patients have used since 1997, the PleurX system helps you drain fluid buildup in the comfort of your own home, without the need for repeat doctor or hospital visits.

Pre- and Post-Operative Respiratory Care

Pre-operative respiratory care focuses on preparing a patient to undergo surgery in such a way as to improve their chances of a successful surgery and reduce their chances of developing respiratory complications after their procedure. Post-operative respiratory care similarly seeks to prevent complications after the procedure through approaches such as CPAP, positive expiratory pressure, and more.

Pulmonary Rehab

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a program of education and exercise classes that teaches you about your lungs, how to exercise and do activities with less shortness of breath, and how to “live” better with your lung condition. Learn more about your lungs, and become more active with less shortness of breath by attending these classes, designed specifically for patients who suffer from lung problems.

Tracheostomy Aspiration Care In McAllen

A tracheostomy provides airway access through a tube inserted into a small incision in the trachea. Taking care of a tracheostomy, and managing the increased risk of aspiration, requires careful and ongoing support. At our clinic, we can educate you and your family on the appropriate care of a tracheostomy, and provide the supplies you need to manage it effectively at home. Let us make this care easier and less stressful so you and your family can breathe better.
