Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) includes a group of lung diseases that block airflow and make it difficult to breathe. Emphysema, chronic bronchitis, refractory (non-reversible) asthma and other progressive lung diseases fall within this category. Nearly 3 million new cases of COPD are diagnosed in the U.S. each year.

Treatments for COPD continue to improve, and early treatment can actually increase your lifespan. The Pulmonary and Sleep Center of the Valley specializes in diagnosing COPD and providing effective treatment options that can improve your breathing and quality of life.

How Do You Know If You Have COPD?

COPD is often misdiagnosed, or not diagnosed until the individual’s condition is advanced. If you feel as if you may suffer from COPD, prompt consultation with a medical professional is essential. Your evaluation will include an examination of your medical history and symptoms, as well as a physical exam.

In addition, COPD is diagnosed by a pulmonary function test. These tests, the most common of which is spirometry, evaluate the amount of air the patient can inhale or exhale, as well as how much oxygen the lungs are delivering to the body. You may also undergo other tests, such as a chest X-ray or CT scan. Once you receive a diagnosis, you can move forward with the treatment of your condition.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Treatment

Depending upon the severity of your COPD, treatment can take a variety of forms. For example, treatments may include nutritional and respiratory therapies, medicines, exercise, and other treatments. The Pulmonary and Sleep Center of the Valley has respiratory therapies, medicines, exercise, and other treatments designed to help you breathe easier, regardless of the severity of your COPD.
